In need of improvement!

Some people can walk so fast, they might as well be jogging!  I, however, am NOT a fast walker.  I'd rather be jogging, it's the only way that I can keep up.  My problem is, my stride isn't very big when I walk OR jog.  Thus, I get no where really fast!  It's frustrating as all get out!!  My partner can do a 3/1 walk/jog and I was doing a 2:25/1:15 walk/jog and was barely keeping up with her.  I'm so angry about this...I want to improve my time!!  I'm just afraid that if I really push myself to have that larger stride, I'll poop out faster and I won't make the distance.

This has been infuriating bothering me for several weeks.  My small group bible study said it best when I told them about it:  "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."  ISN'T THAT THE TRUTH?!  I would love to pick up and just RUN for as long as my body would let me....but that would be about to the end of my road. *SIGH*

I seriously think that my partner needs to find someone else so I don't hold her back.

I'm just so upset and disappointed that my body can't do what I want it to do!!!

  1. Are you sick of my comments and advice already, if so I can stop giving it. First - short strides are good - keep doing them, longer strides can increase your risk of injury. Second, speed isn't something to even worry about or want this first training cycle - speed will come. I've been running for 2 years now and I'm only one min/mile faster than I was 2 years ago. Gaining speed requires a LOT of crazy hard training that isn't in the cards for your first go around. Keep training after your first half and you can incorporate little bouts - but your goal should be just to finish for now. At some point (could be soon or could be later - up to you), I want to show you what I learned recently about speed - it was EYE OPENING & LIFE CHANGING for both "C" and I. I will try to dig up a blog post from Pretendthisisreal and her comments on my blog as a result - awesomely helpful! Third, I too think that I hold my running partner back, but my running mentor says if she is having fun and you're having fun then keep doing running together. Third, you're doing great. Patience girl, you're going to be amazing!!!

p.s. I have a massage in FW on Friday afternoon and so I will already be up there and getting our packets. I can pick up yours and Tia's if you want then meet you here in town somewhere on Friday night. Up to you. Packet pick up is exactly like it was for the Full Moon - go to the table and give them your name. I'd be happy to get yours for you though since I'll be there and be coming back. Email me if you want me to do it.
See you Saturday for sure-we'll have to have some photos :)

  2. You can always work on speed later. Focus on finishing and having fun this time.
